Since ancient times, people have been building towers that have signal flames on top. These are called lighthouses. Lighthouses warn sailors of dangerous reefs and unpredictable currents, helping ships lay a safe course into the harbor.
A lighthouse is the highest point on the shoreline. During thunderstorms, lighthouses can be hit by lightning, that’s why the lightning rod has a very important role. If a lighthouse is on the open sea, it can serve as both the caretaker’s home and a place to store fuel.
The most important aspect of a lighthouse is its lantern. In the olden days, lighthouses’ lanterns would be lit by a fire. But today they use searchlights. As the searchlight rotates, sailors see flashes of light from afar.
If visibility is poor, the lighthouse lets off an audible signal. Previously, a gong, a bell, or a cannon were used for sound signals. Now, lighthouses use sirens.
Lighthouses have been around for a long time. One of the oldest lighthouses stood near the legendary city of Troy, in the Dardanelles strait. Another famous lighthouse, Alexandria, was built in the 3rd century BC, on Pharaoh’s Island. The Alexandria lighthouse is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It stood for nearly two millennia, until it was destroyed by earthquakes.
The construction of lighthouses took a big turn in the 18th century. During this time, world trade began to actively develop, and more and more cargo ships crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
