Lighthouses
By: Roman Belayev

Ever since the ancient times, humanity builds towers, on top of which they light a fire. Those towers are called lighthouses. Lighthouses warn sailors of dangerous reefs and currents, and help ships find a route or dock in a bay.

A lighthouse - the peak of a coastline. During a thunderstorm it can be struck by lightning, so the spire of the lighthouse is a lightning rod. If the lighthouse is in the middle of the sea, it functions as a home of the overseer, and as a storage for its fuel.

The most important section of a lighthouse is the lantern section. During the old times, in this section, a fire was lit. Noways, there is a projector. The projector rotates, and the sailors see the flashes of light from far away.

If the visibility is low, the lighthouse also emits a sound signal. Back then, a gong, bell or a cannon were used to produce the signal. Nowadays the shrill of an electric horn sounds from the lighthouse.

Lighthouses started to exist during ancient times. One of the oldest lighthouses stood not far from the legendary city of Troy, on the coastline of the Dardanelles Strait. Another famous lighthouse is the Alexandrovsky which was built during the third century BCE, on the island Faros. The Alexandrovsky lighthouse is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. It stood for two millennia before being destroyed by earthquakes.

The building of lighthouses began in the eighteenth century. During that time trade between nations developed, and more ships with cargo crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

This is a difficult text, so I'd say - you did a good job overall. But sometimes a translator should not be afraid to research the subject he (or she) is working on. For example, we would not say "The Alexandrovsky lighthouse" in English, but instead "Lighthouse of Alexandria". Also, "BCE" - should be BC, in English it means simply "Before Christ". But overall, well done.

Good job, Костя! Regretfully, I did not receive the Russian original to read. Minor things: Alexandrovsky sounds ultimately Russian for the lighthouse on the island Faros, when Russia did not exist yet. Was it named after Alexander Macedonian? Also it is BC, not BCE. Thank you.
