Is It Easy to Be a King?
- I am so fed up with this! – shouted the king one morning. – All these problems, questions. And I have to solve everything, while also thinking about what legacy I shall leave in the history books. I would let anyone reign if that meant I could rest!
A queue of those wishing to take the king’s place quickly formed from the entrance to the throne room all the way to the city gates.
The minister, who did not have time to secure a spot in the queue, gave the king a perplexed look.
- Do you wish for them to be dispersed?
- Let it be! Let all of them reign!
- You have two minutes each! – declared the minster.
A commotion began in the queue.
- First!
The first contender barely had time to position himself on the throne and immediately began drowning in questions: borders, neighbour, foreign delegations.
- What do we do?
- What? Where?
- We need a decision right this minute.
- Ummm…
- You time is up! Next!
- But I have not had any time to leave my name in the history books.
- That is entirely you fault! You should be in better shape next time!
The flow of monarchs was quite orderly.
- Please, line up, line up!
Some only had time to sit on the throne.
Others – to stamp some papers.
Others – to greet foreign guests.
- Greet our foreign guests, please! With presents!
- I want to grant the presents! Pick me! – someone shouted from the queue.
The messengers talked for a long time. Five people have been replaced during that period.
Finally, the head messenger said:
- As an act of courtesy, please accept this humble gift.
But while the gift was obtained…
- You, time is up! – the minister shouted. – You cannot have the gift anymore. Please go, do not hold up the queue!
- That is not fair! I had to endure this long speech!
- Rules are rules!
The next person, who received the gift, was ecstatic. That is, until he opened the box and a giant cougar jumped out.
- For your information, this is a very rare animal.
- What use is a cougar to me?!
- So you think it is easy to reign? Take the cougar with you and get out of my sight!
The cougar was taken by its new owner.
However, the messengers complained at the crowded scene, expressed their dissatisfaction and went back home.
The king returned to the palace in the evening of the next day.
He was tan and fully rested.
- I cannot leave this place for a single day!
- Being a king is a busy and thankless job, - whispered the crowd. – How does our king manage it?
Only one of the contenders remained satisfied with the job. During his two minutes of reign, the king was designated to have tea. He has never tried tarts as good as those served in the palace.

I want to grant the presents! - no, he wanted to GET the presents (makes sense, doesn't it)
